At BayWa r.e., we believe renewable energy is about more than just generating clean electricity - it’s about strengthening the communities that make our projects possible. Our work goes beyond developing wind, solar, and energy storage projects. We want to invest in the people, businesses, and local economies that bring them to life.
From the first conversations about land use to the long-term operation of our projects, we focus on building trust and fostering collaboration. Local communities have a deep understanding of their own needs and priorities. That is why we actively listen, engage, and work together to ensure our projects create lasting, meaningful benefits for everyone involved.
Sustainability with Purpose
Sustainability isn’t just a goal – it’s a responsibility.
Our Sustainability Framework 2025 is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), helping us ensure that our work benefi ts not just the environment but also the people and economies we support.
By focusing on ten priority SDGs, we’re guiding our business decisions in ways that maximise positive impact. This framework helps us make sure that as we generate clean energy, we’re
also fostering resilient communities and a thriving planet.

Engaging with Communities Every Step of the Way

We believe that strong relationships lead to better projects.
That is why we approach community engagement as an ongoing conversation – one where we listen, adapt, and work together to create the best outcomes for everyone involved. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we shape our engagement efforts based on the unique needs and priorities of each community. Whether it is through informal chats, community events, or structured discussions, our goal is to ensure that local voices help form our projects in meaningful ways.
We recognise that engagement isn’t just about providing information – it is about building trust, addressing concerns, and ensuring that renewable energy projects bring tangible benefits to the areas where they are built.
Our Approach to Community Engagement
- Dedicated Community Liaison Officers to maintain open, two-way communication
- Opportunities for local input at every stage, from planning to long-term operations
- Collaborative discussions with local representatives to align with community priorities
- Public events and meetings to share project updates and answer questions
Our Principles of Engagement

Investing in Education for a Sustainable Future
The transition to renewable energy isn’t just about technology – it’s about people. We are committed to supporting education and inspiring the next generation of innovators, engineers, and environmental leaders.
Through partnerships with schools, hands-on workshops, site visits, and community projects, we are helping students and local groups to explore the opportunities that the renewable energy sector offers. By making renewable energy education engaging and accessible, we are empowering communities to take an active role in building a more sustainable future.
We are helping to equip people with the tools they need to support the shift to renewable energy, expanding access to knowledge and practical experience.
Supporting Local Communities Through Sponsorships
At BayWa r.e., we are committed to building strong relationships with the communities around our renewable energy projects. Alongside our focus on education and engagement, we support local events that bring people together, celebrate heritage, and contribute to community life.
By supporting these events, we are helping to sustain traditions, strengthen local connections, and celebrate what makes each community unique.
Recently, we were proud to sponsor a range of events that reflect the culture and traditions of these regions:
• International Sheep Dog Championships – Showcasing skill, teamwork, and dedication.
• Kirkconnel & Kelloholm Children‘s Gala – A much loved day for local families.
• The Highland Gathering at Corriegarth Estate – A celebration of Scottish traditions.
• The Galloway Country Fair – Highlighting rural life and craftsmanship.
• The Riding of the Marches 2024 – A historic event that brings communities together.
Delivering Tangible Benefits to Local Communities
Renewable energy projects bring economic and environmental opportunities, but we believe their impact should go beyond energy generation. Our Community Benefit Funds ensure that local communities see direct and meaningful advantages from hosting our developments.
This flexible funding supports a wide range of initiatives, from large-scale infrastructure projects to grassroots community programmes. It can be used for both major capital investments and revenue-generating activities that might otherwise struggle to find funding. Beyond this financial community support, our projects have the potential to create economic opportunities for local businesses, suppliers, and contractors. A variety of services may be needed throughout the construction and operational phases and our teams are committed to involve local businesses wherever possible.
Case Study: Broken Cross Wind Farm
The Broken Cross Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, which was completed by BayWa r.e. in 2024, provides an annual community benefit of £5,000 per installed megawatt, shared between the communities of Coalburn, Lesmahagow, Douglas Water and Rigside. The fund will amount to circa £6 million during the operational lifecycle of the project.
BayWa r.e. has worked closely with local representatives to establish a benefit fund tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each of the three communities. Initiatives include a Local Energy Discount Scheme, funding for a Community Development Worker, and microgrants of up to £1,000 for local groups and organisations. In Lesmahagow, the first annual payment will be used to upgrade a children’s play area in a local park.

A Long-Term Partner in Sustainable Growth
At BayWa r.e., we’re not just building renewable energy projects – we are fostering meaningful connections. Our commitment to community engagement, sustainability, and education is at the core of everything we do.
As we continue to develop clean energy solutions, we remain dedicated to:
