Harness the potential of offshore wind

The power behind the UK and Ireland’s renewable future.

Leveraging decades of wind power expertise

Offshore wind is set to become one of the British Isles’ main renewable energy sources in the next 10 years. It’s a proven high-growth market that can leverage one of Earth’s most abundant resources for decades to come. The time is now to invest in this positive momentum.

Building on 30 years of onshore experience

BayWa r.e. have over three decades of experience delivering successful onshore wind projects that drive sustainability at scale. We’re trusted for world-class offshore wind development across the UK and Ireland, as well as markets like France, Italy, and Austria. With over 30 GW of offshore projects in development, construction, and operation, your project is in proven safe hands.

The British government aims to deploy up to 50 GW of offshore wind energy by 2030 to meet its net zero objectives by 2050. We’re proud to be part of helping realise that ambition.

The Buchan project: floating offshore wind in the UK

The Buchan Offshore Wind project, off Scotland’s northeast coast, is a collaboration between Elicio, BW Ideol, and BayWa r.e. 65 floating turbines will produce 960 MW of wind power, alongside multiple community benefits like:

  • Focus on local supply chain

  • Skills training provided in partnership with PowerHouse

  • Support for the UHI STEM initiative

  • Sponsoring the Best of Buchan Awards and the Peterhead Scottish Week

  • Cleaning the Aberdeenshire coast

How do floating wind farms work?

Blade rotation

The wind moves the blades, turning the generator.

Energy generation

Generator transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Offshore substation

Electricity transmitted via array cables to the offshore collector substation, increasing electricity voltage for transmission to shore.

Grid Connection

Electricity transmitted through onshore export cables, where power quality and frequency are corrected.

Voltage increase

Voltage is increased again to match the National Grid voltage in the substation, then transmitted to homes.
