Tralorg Wind Farm
Project overview
Tralorg Wind Farm was installed across an area of 5 ha in South Ayrshire. The generating capacity of the project is up to 18.8 MW of wind power, which is enough energy to supply approximately 13,500 homes annually with clean, renewable energy*.
About the Site
The wind farm is located on Tralorg Hill, east of Girvan in South Ayrshire, which is approximately 290 metres above sea level and comprises 8 turbines with a blade height of 100m. Each turbine has a maximum generating capacity of 2.5MW, meaning the site provides 47,479 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year. The area is used as rough grazing for sheep and cattle.
Latest News
Tralorg Wind Farm was commissioned in August 2020 and is now part of the Railpen investment portfolio. BayWa r.e. Operation Services Ltd. continues to manage the site as technical asset manager.
Ecological and ornithological surveys were conducted as part of the planning application.
Habitat enhancements have been introduced through tree replanting and establishment areas, as well as grazing management zones.
Specific at risk habitats were also identified to be protected and enhanced.

The Need for the Project
On 28th April 2019, Scotland’s First Minister declared a “climate emergency”, following this the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Act 2019 was passed committing Scotland to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2045, at the latest.
The Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy, published in December 2017, sets out the target of achieving the “equivalent of 50% of the energy for Scotland’s heat, transport and electricity consumption to be supplied from renewable sources” by 2030. In order to meet this, and wider renewable energy targets by 2030, approximately 17GW of installed capacity will be required throughout Scotland. As onshore wind offers the lowest cost renewable energy technology it is a vital component of the renewables industry in Scotland and will play a key part in achieving these targets.
Tralorg Wind Farm contributes to these targets by adding up to 18.8 MW of installed onshore wind capacity over its 30 year operational lifespan.
